Dr. Vivek Kumar (Ph. D.)

(A Brief Profile)

Dr. Vivek Kumar teaches Sociology at the Center for the Study of Social Systems, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. He did his Ph.D. from the same Center where he teaches. Earlier, He was a Lecturer at the Unit for Sociology of Education, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai.

He presented a paper “Babasaheb Ambedkar’s Ideas of Nation and Nation Building ” at the Calgary University, Organized by Department of Culture and Communication and Department of Library Sciences, University of Calgary, Canada, in March 2007.

Dr. Kumar is author of 5 books, three in English and 2 in Hindi. Dalit Leadership In India, India’s Roaring Revolution” Dalit Assertion and New Horizons, Bahujan Samaj Party and Dalit Assertion in Uttar Pradesh are the name of his books in English. His Hindi books are-Bahujan Samaj Party avm Sanrachnatmak Parivarta and Dalit Samaj: Purani Samasyaen Nai Akancchyen.

Although he has written dozens of articles in journals and books but his few articles “Situating Dalits in Indian Sociology”, ‘Education and Exclusion of Dalits’ ‘Understanding Politics of Reservation: A perspective from Below’ ‘Understanding Dalit Diaspora’, ‘Bahujan Samaj Party: Some issues of Democracy and governance’, Governance in the Era of Globalization: Understanding the Exclusion and assertion of Dalits India, have made significant impact in academic circles.

Dr. Vivek is in a way pioneer in propounding the concepts from sociological point of view of ‘Dalits’, ‘Dependent and Independent Dalit Political Leadership’, ‘Dalit Diaspora’, ‘Arohi Mobilization’, ‘Human Distress Index for Dalits’, and Exclusion Index

Association with NGOs: He was also consultant to Action Aid India, UP Chapter. As the Co-Convener of National Campaign for Dalit Human Rights he attended ‘World Conference Against Racism’ held in Durban in 2001, He is Chief adviser to RDSS, Lucknow.

Associated with Media: He was an Assistant editor in The Pioneer in Lucknow and possibly the first Dalit Columnist to write regular columns for the Hindi weekly ‘Pioneer’, Published from Lucknow. Now a days he anchors a weekly television porgramme ‘Dalit Awaaz’ at Jain Television, New Delhi and writes fortnightly column in India’s largest circulated Hindi Daily Dainik Jagran.

He has supervised two Ph. D and five M. Phils under him and taught number of courses at Center for the study if Social Systems/ School of Social Sciences/Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.

He is the Editor of the News Letter of RC-9 ‘Dalits and Backwards’ of Indian Sociological Society of India.
